Fireplaces are wonderful at this time of year, when freezing temperatures outdoors make people yearn for warmth and comfort indoors. However, pet owners must take extra care when enjoying use of the fireplace. If you're a pet owner, these tips will help you keep your pet safe while you bask in the cozy heat from the fire.
Separate Your Pet from the Fireplace
Not all pets need to be kept away from the fireplace; some pets will ignore the fireplace altogether. However, some pets display a high level of interest in the fireplace, and others wish to sit too close to the flames. If you need to keep your pet away from the hearth, there are several methods you can use.
- Install a pet-safe tri-fold fire screen that protrudes from the opening in the fireplace. If your pet is likely to jump over the screen, you may need to install a screen with a protective top that will prevent your pet from jumping into the fireplace.
- Keep your pet in a separate part of the house or in the yard when a fire is burning in the fireplace.
- Use a baby gate to keep your pet out of the room where the fireplace is located.
Place Pet Beds Away from the Fire
If your pet is allowed to be in the same room with the fire, make sure that your pet's bed and crate are located far enough away from the fire that sparks will not burn your pet. Keep all pet-related items like the bed, crate and toys at least 3 feet from the opening in the hearth.
Never Leave a Pet Unattended with a Fire
Never leave your pet alone in the same room with the burning fire. If you are the only person in the room and you wish to leave, bring your pet with you when you go.
Keep Your Pet Away from Chimney Cleaners
Pets (dogs in particular) can feel threatened by strangers who come to inspect or clean the fireplace. Your pet may try to interfere with the fireplace servicing, posing a danger to himself or herself and the fireplace professionals. When you have your fireplace inspected and cleaned each year by a company like B C Fireplace Service Inc, put your pet in the back yard, in his or her crate, or have a family member take your pet for a walk.
Following these tips should keep your pet safe when you use the fireplace this winter.
