4 Things You Need To Know About Caring For A Glass Deck Railing

Glass railings are a popular option around decks, balconies, and pools; their main draw is that they provide an un-obscured view of one's surroundings while also creating a safety barrier. Still, glass railings--like all other types of railings--come with their inherent maintenance and care needs. Specifically, there are a few steps that should be taken to keep glass railings not only looking their best, but safe as well.

1. Vinegar is Great for Set-In Stains

You may have heard of using white vinegar to clean your glass shower doors; well, it's just as effective on outdoor glass railings. You can dilute white vinegar with equal parts water to remove typical dirt and debris build-up. However, for more caked-on debris, you can use white vinegar in its pure form (undiluted). Simply use a non-abrasive scrubber to apply the vinegar and remove any set-in stains, then rinse with warm water.

2. Lemon Oil Can Prevent Water Spots

Did you know that lemon oil can be used to prevent water spots from forming on glass surfaces? Simply apply a small amount to a clean cloth, then wipe your glass railing all over to distribute the oil. Of course, using lemon oil won't eliminate the need for regular cleaning and squeegee-ing, but it may help you prolong the amount of time you can wait in between cleanings.

3. Use a Lint-Free Cloth for Best Results

Any time you're wiping your glass railing down--whether it's while applying lemon oil or wiping clean with a vinegar solution--it's important to use a lint-free cloth. Otherwise, you can easily end up with unsightly streaks. Paper towels and regular wash cloths aren't recommended for this, but you can use store-bought microfiber cloths for this, or you can even use an old t-cotton t-shirt.

4. Regular Inspections Are a Must

Finally, make sure that you're taking steps to keep your glass railing safe in addition to looking great. This means inspecting your railings regularly to ensure that they're secure. Most glass railings are secured with aluminum brackets, which are resistant to rust, but it's still a good idea to make sure the brackets and/or screws haven't begun to corrode. Furthermore, be sure that the surface the railing is attached to (such as a wooden deck) is structurally sound, as wood rot or termite damage around a railing bracket can compromise the structural integrity of the railing itself and lead to serious accident or injury.
